What's everyone tweeting about?

Here's what I'm wondering: are people just saying they use Twitter because it's so frequently talked about and they want to seem "cool", or are they actually using it. And if so, what for? The image above came from an article on and shows that almost three times as many African-Americans than White internet users are tweeting. What's up with that?

Digging a little deeper and Pew Research tells me that "One in ten African-American internet users now visit Twitter on a typical day—that is double the rate for Latinos and nearly four times the rate for whites". But why is this? What does this particular group see in Twitter that the others perhaps aren't?

  • Could it be related to the group's high usage of smart phones? But why Twitter, specifically?
  • Could it have something to do with the short and sweet nature of Twitter's 140 character limit?
  • Perhaps it's because on average, African Americans are younger than other groups.
  • Or is there a special attraction for this group in being able to follow the entertainment industry, fashion and gossip which is typically associated with Twitter?

As Charlotte Young summarizes, "the reasons why African Americans love Twitter, can only be answered by each individual".
